A Guide To Wheat and Gluten-Free Foods

Learning that you’re wheat or gluten intolerant can be something of a headache, especially when it comes to finding foods that fit in with your new diet.

Here, we’ve given you some tips and advice for achieving a wheat free diet, as easily as possible.

Wheat Versus Gluten

Before you begin to plan your diet, it’s important to identity what it is your body is actually intolerant to.

Being gluten intolerant means that you’re actually allergic to a protein contained within wheat. Therefore, the products and foods you choose don’t necessarily have to be completely wheat free; they just need to have had the gluten removed.

However, if you’re intolerant to wheat, your diet will be limited to things totally free of wheat.

You can find more information about the different types of wheat intolerance, in this useful article from the Daily Mail.

Eating Out

Just because you’re limited to what you can and can’t eat, doesn’t mean that your only option is to eat at home. The skill is being able to spot that a dish on the menu contains wheat or gluten, when it may not an obvious ingredient.

These days, restaurants have to be able to cater for customers with all sorts of dietary requirements. Don’t be afraid to quiz the waiting staff about the contents of dishes; after all, it’s their job. If you inform waiting staff that you suffer from an allergy or intolerance, they will be able to offer advice on what you can choose from the menu.

Essential Vitamins and Minerals

Having a limited diet increases the risk that your body may not be getting the vitamins and minerals that it needs to function. A gluten or wheat free diet is naturally lacking in iron, calcium and fibre. That’s why it’s important for people suffering from an intolerance to give their body a helping hand with a daily multivitamin.

Using an online pharmacy like Medicines2U is a fast and easy way of buying multivitamins and supplements, as well as prescription medication. If you buy these in large quantities, you’ll only need to restock a few times a year and your items will be delivery free to your door.

Online Food Shopping

The big supermarkets are making more gluten and wheat free products available, although this is often a small section of one aisle. So you’re unlikely to be able to pick up your weekly shop!

You stand a much better chance of finding these foods online, using suppliers such as Ethical Superstore. They stock a range of everyday groceries, including tea, coffee and even baby food, which are suitable for people with food intolerances. Take a look at their selection of gluten-free food.

Keeping your diet wheat and gluten free can be difficult, especially to begin with. You should try to remain positive and concentrate on the foods you are able to eat, rather than thinking about all of the things you can’t have.
